Naturopathic Pregnancy Support ยท Scottsdale, AZ + California Virtual

Your OB monitors your pregnancy.
We help you thrive in it.

Your OB appointments are essential โ€” and they cover about 12 minutes per trimester of what actually happens inside your body during pregnancy. The nutrition, supplementation, thyroid monitoring, metabolic health, and postpartum preparation that determines how you feel, how your baby develops, and how quickly you recover? That's the gap we fill.

"I came to Dr. Zen early in my pregnancy without an OB yet. She filled every gap โ€” ordered labs, curated my prenatal vitamins, answered every question. I would recommend her to all women."

The gap no one talks about

Your OB is exceptional at what they do.
Prenatal visits weren't designed for this.

A standard prenatal visit is 10โ€“15 minutes. It covers blood pressure, fundal height, fetal heart rate, and the essentials of medical monitoring. This is exactly what it should do โ€” and it doesn't leave room for anything else. Not in-depth nutrition. Not evidence-based supplementation. Not metabolic screening beyond the standard glucose test. Not the conversation about how what you do now shapes who you will be postpartum. That space doesn't exist in conventional prenatal care. We created it.

What we focus on

The pillars of pregnancy care
that change your outcomes.

Every one of these areas has meaningful, evidence-based impact on how you feel during pregnancy, how your baby develops, and how smoothly you recover postpartum. None of them fit into a standard prenatal appointment.

๐Ÿฅ—

Prenatal nutrition

Not generic "eat well" advice โ€” specific guidance on protein targets, nutrient-dense foods by trimester, managing nausea without losing nutrition, and dietary strategies for blood sugar, iron, and fetal development.

๐Ÿ’Š

Supplement strategy

Your prenatal vitamin is a starting point. Based on your labs and health history, Dr. Zen builds a targeted protocol โ€” omega-3 DHA, vitamin D, magnesium, iron, choline, and others โ€” in the right forms and doses for your specific pregnancy.

๐Ÿฆ‹

Thyroid monitoring

Thyroid hormone requirements increase by 25โ€“50% in pregnancy. For women with Hashimoto's or thyroid history, close monitoring with pregnancy-specific TSH targets (below 2.5 in the first trimester) is essential for both maternal health and fetal neurological development.

๐Ÿ“Š

Blood sugar & metabolic health

Proactive blood sugar monitoring from early pregnancy โ€” not just a single glucose test at 28 weeks. For women with PCOS, insulin resistance, or gestational diabetes history, early intervention meaningfully reduces risk and improves outcomes.

๐Ÿฉธ

Iron & ferritin

Iron demand increases significantly in pregnancy and many women become deficient without knowing it. We track ferritin โ€” not just hemoglobin โ€” throughout pregnancy and replete proactively to support energy, brain health, and postpartum recovery.

๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ

Movement & physical wellbeing

Evidence-based movement guidance for each trimester โ€” what supports pelvic floor health, what to modify and when, how to stay strong for labor and delivery, and how exercise choices now affect recovery speed postpartum.

๐Ÿง

Mood & mental wellbeing

Prenatal anxiety and depression are common and often undertreated. Nutritional factors โ€” omega-3s, B vitamins, iron, vitamin D โ€” have meaningful evidence in supporting mood during pregnancy alongside conventional care.

๐ŸŒฑ

Postpartum preparation

What you do during pregnancy directly shapes your postpartum recovery. Building nutritional reserves, optimizing thyroid and metabolic function, and having a postpartum plan before you deliver โ€” not after โ€” changes the trajectory of your fourth trimester entirely.

Trimester by trimester

Each phase has different needs.
Your care evolves with them.

We typically see patients once per trimester โ€” timed to address what's most clinically relevant at each stage, and to work alongside rather than duplicate your OB's schedule.

First Trimester ยท Weeks 1โ€“13

Foundation & early risk

  • Baseline labs โ€” thyroid, iron, vitamin D, nutrient status
  • Nausea management with nutritional strategies
  • Supplement protocol tailored to your labs
  • Blood sugar baseline for women with PCOS or insulin resistance history
  • Thyroid medication adjustment if on levothyroxine
  • Early postpartum planning conversation
Second Trimester ยท Weeks 14โ€“27

Growth & metabolic health

  • Nutrition re-evaluation as appetite normalizes
  • Iron and ferritin check โ€” demand increases significantly this trimester
  • Blood sugar monitoring ahead of standard glucose test
  • Movement guidance as center of gravity shifts
  • Gestational diabetes prevention for at-risk women
  • Thyroid recheck and adjustment

Preparation & postpartum planning

  • Final nutrition and supplement review
  • Iron and nutrient optimization before delivery blood loss
  • Postpartum supplement protocol prepared in advance

Women who receive integrative prenatal support consistently have smoother postpartum transitions: better energy, faster hormonal recovery, more stable mood, and a clearer path back to themselves. We don't just see you through pregnancy. We set you up for what's next.

Dr. Alissia Zenhausern-Pfeiffer,
NMD, FABNE

As a mother of two who navigated her own pregnancy with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and gestational diabetes, Dr. Zen understands pregnancy from the inside โ€” not just from a textbook. She knows what it means to manage your own health while growing a baby, and to worry about what the labs mean and whether you're doing enough.

She built the pregnancy support model at NMD Wellness because she experienced firsthand what's missing in conventional prenatal care โ€” and because the research is clear that what happens in the nine months of pregnancy directly shapes the postpartum experience. She is here to make sure you walk into delivery well-prepared and walk out of postpartum feeling like yourself again.

Before you book

Questions you might have.

Never. Your OB or midwife provides the essential medical monitoring that your pregnancy requires โ€” and that relationship is irreplaceable. Dr. Zen works alongside your existing prenatal team, not instead of them. With your permission, she communicates with your OB to ensure labs, protocols, and timing are all coordinated. Many OBs across Arizona appreciate having a provider addressing the nutritional and metabolic aspects of pregnancy that their visit structure doesn't allow time for.
As early as you can โ€” ideally in the first trimester when the foundation for the entire pregnancy is being laid. The first 12 weeks are when thyroid requirements spike, when nutritional status matters most for fetal development, and when blood sugar patterns establish. Women who were already patients through a fertility journey transition to pregnancy care seamlessly. New patients can begin at any stage of pregnancy and receive meaningful support right away.
Already in your second or third trimester? Come now. There is still significant value in optimizing your nutrition, iron, thyroid, and postpartum preparation in the weeks you have remaining.
Yes โ€” and proactively rather than reactively. Both conditions require closer monitoring during pregnancy than conventional prenatal care typically provides. Women with PCOS have elevated risk for gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and preterm birth that benefit from early metabolic monitoring. Women with Hashimoto's need thyroid labs more frequently than standard prenatal schedules provide, with stricter TSH targets to protect fetal development. If you were already our patient for either condition, your care continues without interruption.
We provide comprehensive gestational diabetes support alongside your OB's management โ€” targeted nutritional guidance for blood sugar stabilization, safe movement strategies, supplement support, and close monitoring of metabolic markers. We also address the postpartum implications: gestational diabetes significantly increases long-term risk of type 2 diabetes, and the postpartum period is a critical window for metabolic recovery and risk reduction.
Yes. Dr. Zen is licensed in both Arizona and California. California residents receive the same comprehensive prenatal nutrition counseling, lab interpretation, thyroid monitoring, supplement protocols, and ongoing membership support via telehealth โ€” which is particularly convenient during pregnancy when travel is sometimes difficult.
We are a concierge, fee-for-service practice and do not bill insurance directly. We provide superbills for potential out-of-network reimbursement, accept HSA and FSA funds, and labs can typically be run through your insurance. Investment is discussed personally on your discovery call.

Pregnancy is nine months.
Postpartum is the rest of your life.

What you invest in during pregnancy pays forward. Nutritional reserves, optimized thyroid, stable blood sugar, and a postpartum plan in place before you deliver โ€” this is how you walk into the fourth trimester ready.
