You don't have to be trying to conceive

You deserve to feel well
in your body โ€” full stop.

A significant portion of Dr. Zen's patients aren't trying to get pregnant. They're women who are exhausted by a cycle that controls their life. Women who have been told their pain is normal. Women who want to come off hormonal birth control and don't know what to expect. Women who have a diagnosis โ€” endometriosis, PMDD, fibroids โ€” and want more than symptom management.

Your hormonal health matters whether or not a baby is part of your plan. Understanding your cycle, addressing what's driving your symptoms, and feeling consistently well throughout your month โ€” that's worth pursuing for its own sake.

๐ŸŒŠ

PMS that takes over your life

Mood swings, bloating, breast tenderness, fatigue, cravings โ€” showing up like clockwork every cycle. PMS severe enough to affect your relationships and your work is not something you have to accept. It has a hormonal root cause and a hormonal solution.

โšก

PMDD โ€” the week before your period

Not just PMS โ€” a profound shift in who you are. Rage, despair, anxiety that disappears the moment your period starts. PMDD is a recognized hormonal condition driven by sensitivity to progesterone metabolites. It responds to targeted treatment.

๐Ÿ”ฅ

Painful periods

Periods that put you on the floor. Pain that requires medication just to function. This isn't normal โ€” it's a signal. Endometriosis, adenomyosis, prostaglandin imbalance, or hormonal imbalance are driving it. Finding out which one changes everything.

๐Ÿ”„

Irregular or unpredictable cycles

Cycles that are 21 days one month and 45 the next. Periods that disappear for months. Spotting between cycles. Irregularity is your body telling you something about your hormonal health โ€” and we listen.

๐ŸŒฟ

Coming off birth control

You want to stop hormonal contraception and don't know what your body will do. Post-pill hormone transition can be smooth or challenging depending on what was being masked. We support the process and identify what's underneath.

๐Ÿฉบ

Endometriosis

Diagnosed or suspected endo. You've had surgery โ€” or you're trying to avoid it. Integrative management of endometriosis addresses the hormonal and inflammatory drivers that conventional care rarely has time for.

Signs your hormones need attention

None of this is something
you should just push through.

These symptoms are common. That doesn't mean they're normal โ€” or that they don't have a cause worth investigating.

๐ŸŒŠ

PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome)

Physical and emotional symptoms in the luteal phase driven by progesterone deficiency, hormonal imbalance, inflammation, or neurotransmitter changes. Highly responsive to targeted intervention.

โšก

PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder)

Severe mood and psychological symptoms in the luteal phase. Driven by sensitivity to progesterone metabolites and often worsened by low serotonin, nutrient deficiencies, and HPA dysregulation.

๐Ÿ”ฅ

Dysmenorrhea (Painful Periods)

Primary dysmenorrhea from prostaglandin excess, or secondary dysmenorrhea from endometriosis, adenomyosis, or fibroids. Root cause identification changes the treatment completely.

๐ŸŒฟ

Endometriosis

Integrative management addressing hormonal imbalance, systemic inflammation, gut health, and immune dysregulation โ€” alongside conventional and surgical care. Significant symptom reduction is possible.

๐Ÿ”„

Irregular & Absent Cycles

Oligomenorrhea, amenorrhea, and unpredictable cycle lengths โ€” evaluated through comprehensive hormonal, thyroid, and metabolic assessment to identify what's driving the irregularity.

๐Ÿฉธ

Heavy Menstrual Bleeding

Menorrhagia from uterine fibroids, adenomyosis, endometrial polyps, coagulation issues, or hormonal imbalance. Evaluated thoroughly before treatment โ€” cause determines approach.

How we approach it

Understanding your cycle
is the beginning of changing it.

Most women with cycle and hormone symptoms are offered one of two things: hormonal birth control to suppress what's happening, or pain medication to manage it. Neither addresses what's actually driving the problem. We do.

1

Comprehensive hormone evaluation

Full sex hormone panel โ€” estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA-S, LH, FSH โ€” timed appropriately to your cycle. Plus thyroid, cortisol, inflammatory markers, and metabolic assessment. Your cycle is a window into your overall hormonal health. We look through the whole window.

2

Cycle mapping & pattern recognition

We interpret your symptoms in the context of your cycle phase โ€” because when symptoms occur tells us as much as what the symptoms are. PMS in the luteal phase points to different drivers than mid-cycle symptoms or heavy flow at onset.

3

Root cause protocol

Targeted nutrition, evidence-based supplementation, lifestyle modifications, and prescription support when appropriate โ€” built around your specific hormonal picture. Not a generic protocol. Your labs, your symptoms, your life.

4

Ongoing monitoring & refinement

Cycle symptoms change as protocols take effect. We track progress with follow-up labs, symptom mapping, and regular check-ins โ€” adjusting as your hormonal landscape shifts. Direct access to Dr. Zen between visits means you're never left managing changes alone.

Naturopathic doesn't mean anti-medication. Dr. Zen can prescribe bioidentical progesterone, hormonal contraception, and other medications when they are clinically the right choice. The goal is always what actually works for you โ€” not a philosophical position.

Dr. Alissia Zenhausern-Pfeiffer,
NMD, FABNE

Dr. Zen is a board-certified naturopathic endocrinologist and one of a small number nationally to hold the FABNE designation. She specializes in the full spectrum of women's hormonal health โ€” including conditions that fall outside the fertility conversation.

She sees women who simply want to feel well in their bodies throughout their month. Women who are done accepting pain, mood disruption, and unpredictability as the price of a cycle. Women who want answers, not just management.

Questions you might have.

Not at all. A significant portion of Dr. Zen's patients are not trying to conceive โ€” they're women who want to understand their hormones, feel consistently well throughout their cycle, manage symptoms that have been dismissed elsewhere, or simply take better care of their hormonal health. Your cycle health matters regardless of your family planning status.
Pain that disrupts your daily life, requires medication to manage, or puts you in bed is not something you should accept as normal. It is common โ€” that's different. Severe period pain is almost always driven by a specific cause: prostaglandin imbalance, endometriosis, adenomyosis, fibroids, hormonal imbalance, or progesterone deficiency. Identifying which one changes the treatment entirely. "Take ibuprofen and push through" is not a diagnosis.
Jess M. had done 4 laparoscopic surgeries before finding Dr. Zen. After 3 months of integrative care, she barely notices her periods. This is not unusual โ€” it's what happens when the root cause is actually addressed.
PMS involves physical and emotional symptoms in the week or two before your period. PMDD is significantly more severe โ€” the mood symptoms are dramatic and can include rage, despair, suicidal ideation, or complete personality shifts that resolve almost immediately when your period starts. PMDD is driven by sensitivity to allopregnanolone (a progesterone metabolite) and is often worsened by low serotonin, sleep disruption, and nutrient deficiencies. It is a legitimate hormonal condition and it responds to treatment.
It depends on what was driving your original symptoms and how long you've been on hormonal contraception. Some women transition easily. Others experience significant changes โ€” acne, mood shifts, cycle irregularity, or what's called post-pill PCOS, where elevated androgens emerge after the suppressing effect of birth control is removed. Pre-planning the transition with hormone support makes it significantly smoother. We help you understand what to expect and support your body through the process.
For many women, yes โ€” to a meaningful degree. Endometriosis is a hormone-sensitive, inflammatory condition. An integrative protocol targeting hormonal balance, systemic inflammation, gut health, and immune regulation can significantly reduce pain and symptom burden without further surgery. This doesn't replace surgical evaluation when it's medically indicated โ€” but it can dramatically improve quality of life and is often used alongside conventional management rather than instead of it.
Yes. Dr. Zen is licensed in both Arizona and California. California residents receive the same comprehensive hormonal evaluation, lab interpretation, personalized protocols, and ongoing membership support via telehealth.
We are a concierge, fee-for-service practice and do not bill insurance directly. We provide superbills for potential out-of-network reimbursement, accept HSA and FSA funds, and labs can typically be run through your insurance. Investment is discussed personally on your discovery call.

You deserve to feel well
every week of the month.

Not just the week after your period. Not in spite of your cycle. Because of a body that's actually in balance. A discovery call is where that starts.
